Condé Nast Will Have Apple iPad Apps Ready For Shipping Day

Sarah Chubb, president of Condé Nast Digital, told the New York Times that there will be customized magazine apps ready for the device in 60 days.
There will definitely be a GQ iPad app, re-purposed from their iPhone app. Vanity Fair and Wired titles will likely tag along and have apps in the iPad’s store.
But did Apple snub Condé by not asking them to come to the big event?
“They didn’t approach us,” she told the Times. “My guess is, there was no way in three weeks that we could imagine and create something that would be kind of stunning visually,” she said, referring to the time frame the featured developers had to create apps.
“We have a great relationship with them — I’m not sorry, nor do I feel dissed in this,” she said.
She added that publishers like the device, but aren’t jumping out of their seats about it just yet. They’re going to have to though! The clock is ticking.

Does Apple iPad Have A Female Firewall?

Why was the Apple tablet device named iPad? Perhaps Steve Jobs and his crew had no idea that women would be turned off by the name.
Or maybe they just didn’t care.
Fast Company’s Alissa Walker noted some people’s reactions on Twitter and wondered if Jobs’ iPad has “a vaginal firewall.”
Note to Jobs: You might want to convince the other half of the world’s population that they want your tablet. And that doesn’t mean making it pink.
Women account for about 40 percent of gadget spending, according to market research firm NPD Group. Even if they aren’t buying the device for themselves, they are usually the ones buying gifts for their male relatives and kids.
According to some reports from this year’s CES, gadget designers and manufacturers are paying more attention to women. ChipChick.com blogger Helena Stone said at the time. “They finally woke up and were, like, ‘Women make the purchasing decisions in the household.’”
Someone needs to wake up Steve Jobs from his boys-only dream world.
Check out this NBC report on how the gadget industry has mostly ignored women–to its own detriment.

Google Takes Aim At Facebook And Twitter: Social Search Is Now Live
Google announced today that Social Search is coming out of Labs and launching as a full beta.
Social Search, launched late last year in Google Labs, customizes search results by highlighting results written by people within your social circle. Basically, it’s an attempt to challenge Twitter and Facebook as places to find out what your friends think about a topic.
It’s probably still a long way off from doing that, however. Since Google isn’t generally used for social networking, few users have a social circle worth searching.
Here’s a video overview of the new Google Social Search:

CHART OF THE DAY: Amazon’s Stock Wins Day One Of The iPad Onslaught (AMZN, AAPL)
Amazon won the first day of its battle with the iPad. At least, as measured by investors. Amazon finished the day up almost 3%, while Apple was only up 1%.
This is a long term battle, but Jeff Bezos is probably feeling better than he thought he would today.
