Thursday is an extremely busy day, both on the macro and and earnings side. Companies including Exxon Mobil, Starbucks, UPS, Lockheed Martin, and Dow Chemical are all scheduled to report quarterly results for the first three months of 2012. Macro data includes jobless claims in the U.S., Italian business confidence, and German CPI.
Here’s what you need to know.
- South Korea starts things off at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening with first quarter GDP, which last grew by 0.3 percent. Economists forecast that the pace of economic expansion will accellerate to 0.9 percent growth.
- Also at 7:00 p.m. is a reading of consumer confidence in the U.K. Consensus is for a one point decline to 43 in March.
- Japanese all industry activity follows at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. Expectations are for a 0.2 percent sequential decline in February.
- Swedish consumer confidence hits at 3:15 a.m. The headline figure is seen increasing to 1 from 0.
- A reading of Italian business confidence is expected at 4:00 a.m. Economists forecast the nation’s businesses are equally confident month-on-month, with the reading unchanged at 92.1.
- Norwegian unemployment will also be announced at 4:00 a.m., with expectations for a 10 basis point decline to 2.5 percent.
- German consumer prices are set for release at 8:00 a.m. Consensus is for a 0.1 percent increase in April from a month earlier.
- Attention shifts to the U.S. at 8:30 a.m. with the initial unemployment claims report. Expectations are for claims to decline to 375,000 from last week’s 386,000 reading.
- At 10:00 a.m. pending home sales will be announced in the U.S. Sales are seen gaining 1.0 percent month-on-month in March, reversing a 0.5 percent decline in February.
- The Kansas City Federal Reserve will release its reading of manufacturing activity in the region at 11:00 a.m. Economists anticipate the key index will decline two points to 7 in April.
- Closing out the day at 12:00 p.m. is a report on the number of jobless citizens in France. The number of job-seekers is forecast to increase by 2,800 to 2.87 million.

Here Are The Key Market Moving Events For Monday, April 23, 2012 (STI, ETNI, DHII, BEAVI, XRXI, COP, NFLX, TXN, ILMN, AMP, HAS, EAT)

Earnings season picks back up on Monday, with highly anticipated reports out of Netflix, Texas Instruments, and ConocoPhillips. Macro data is light, with no announcements scheduled in the U.S., but flash PMI reports will get markets moving.
Here’s what you need to know.
- Australia starts things off at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday evening with a reading of producer prices. Economists polled by Bloomberg forecast PPI will have gained 0.5 percent sequentially in the first quarter of 2012.
- At 10:30 p.m. a flash reading of Chinese manufacturing will be released. The HSBC Flash PMI last registered at 48.3. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. There is no consensus estimate for the April report.
- A final reading of Japan’s coincident index follows at 1:00 a.m. on Monday morning. The preliminary results came in at 93.7.
- Between 2:45 and 3:00 a.m., reading of French business confidence and manufacturing output will be released. Confidence is expected to remain flat at 96. A flash manufacturing PMI report from MarkitEconomics is expected to increase 70 basis points to 47.4 in April.
- Flash readings of the German service and manufacturing sector hit at 3:30 a.m. Economists forecast both will increase, with services at 52.3 from 52.1 and manufacturing at 49 from 48.4.
- Consumer confidence in Italy follows at 4:00 a.m. Consensus is for a slight decline to 96.2 from 96.8.
- Attention shifts to Canada at 8:30 a.m. when wholesale sales are announced. Expectations are for sales to decline 0.2 percent month-on-month in February.
- At 9:00 a.m. Mexico will release retail sales data, which last logged a 4.4 percent gain in January.

Earnings season slows slightly on Friday — as it does at the end of every week. But there are still two Dow components reporting: General Electric and McDonald’s. Macro data is light, but includes important announcements from Canada and Germany.
Here’s what you need to know.
- Japan starts things off at 7:50 p.m. on Thursday evening with a reading of its service industry. Economists polled by Bloomberg forecast the Tertiary Index will increase 0.7 percent in February, after falling 1.7 percent in January.
- At 9:35 p.m. a flash reading of business conditions in China will be released. There is no consensus estimate for the April report.
- Announcements go quiet until 2:00 a.m. on Friday morning, when German producer prices come out. Consensus is for a 0.4 percent increase in March.
- Consumer confidence in the Netherlands follows at 3:00 a.m. The index last stood at -39.
- At 4:00 a.m. it’s back to Germany with the IFO survey of business conditions. Economists forecast the overall business climate index declined 30 basis points to 109.5 in April, while expectations for the future drop to 102.3 from 102.7.
- British retail sales follow at 4:30 a.m., with expectations for a 0.4 percent increase in March when excluding fuel.
- Attention shifts to Canada at 8:30 a.m. with leading indicators and CPI. Economists anticipate both will increase by 0.5 percent in March.
- At 9:00 a.m. Mexico will release new data on unemployment. Forecasts are for a decline to 4.70 percent in March from 5.33 percent in February.

- Announcements go quiet until 3:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, when Danish consumer confidence comes out. Consensus is for an uptick to 1.5 from -0.4 in April.
- At 4:00 a.m., industrial sales in Italy will be announced with expectations for a 1.1 percent sequential decline in February.
- Hong Kong unemployment follows at 4:30 a.m., with expectations for a 10 basis point increase to 3.5 percent in March.
- Portuguese producer prices hit at 6:00 a.m. The report last showed a 0.3 percent increase in February.

Here Are The Key Market Moving Events For Wednesday, March 28, 2012 (FDO, MOS, RHT)

Markets will be paying close attention to a series of reports out of Europe and the U.S. on Wednesday, with final readings of GDP set for release in France and the U.K., as well as February’s durable goods report in the U.S. In earnings, expect announcements from Family Dollar and Mosaic Co.
Here’s what you need to know.
- France starts things off at 1:30 a.m. EST on Sunday morning with a final reading of fourth quarter GDP. Economists expect the economy expanded by 0.2 percent in the final quarter, the same as an earlier reading.
- Swedish consumer confidence follows at 3:00 a.m. EST, with expectations for the index to improve in March to -2 from -3.2.
- Italian business confidence will be announced at 4:00 a.m. EST. Economists polled by ForexTV expect the index to improve in March to 91.7 from 91.5.
- At 4:30 a.m. EST, the U.K. will release a final reading of fourth quarter GDP. Consensus opinion is for no change from earlier estimates of a 0.2 percent contraction.
- A reading of Icelandic consumer prices will be released at 5:00 a.m. EST. CPI last increased by 1.0 percent in February from January. There is no consensus estimate for the March report.
- German consumer prices are expected to increase 0.3 percent in a March preliminary reading, which is set for release at 8:00 a.m. EST.
- Attention shifts to the U.S. at 8:30 a.m. EST with February’s durable goods orders report. Economists anticipate orders grew by 3.0 percent during the month, while non defense capital goods orders excluding air increased 1.5 percent.
- At 9:00 a.m. EST, the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index will be updated to reflect changes to home prices in Canada in January. There is no consensus estimate at this time.
