US imports and exports down in January
The Commerce Department today announced a fall in US imports and exports, resulting in an unexpected fall in the trade deficit.
According to official figures, exports in January dipped 0.3% to $142.7 billion, with less machinery, agricultural products and civilian aircraft sold.

Chinese inflation rises for fourth consecutive month
Official data today revealed Chinese consumer prices reached a 16-month high last month – the fourth straight monthly rise.
The National Bureau of Statistics said consumer price inflation rose to 2.7% in February compared with a year earlier and up from 1.5% in January.

German exports slump in January
The Federal Statistics Office today announced a fall in German exports for the month of January, with the cold weather being attributed to the fall, according to analysts.
Exports in January fell by 6.3% on the month to €67.9 billion, while imports grew by 6% to €59.2 billion.

UK trade deficit unexpectedly widens in January
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today revealed the UK’s trade gap widened unexpectedly in January to a 17-month high.
The news disappointed markets and sent the already weak pound falling. Sterling fell 0.4% to €1.10 at mid morning and lost 0.75% against the dollar to fall below the $1.50 mark.
